Under a Kabul Sky

Translation of Sous le ciel de Kaboul
A collection of short fiction by Afghan women
Inanna Publications, Toronto, 2022
Finalist for the International Book Awards for Multicultural Fiction

The twelve short stories in this collection were authored by twelve Afghan women from different generations and backgrounds. Originally written in Farsi and published in Afghanistan in various anthologies, they were collected, translated into French and released by Éditions Le Soupirail. Now rendered in English, these stories give expression to voices rarely heard by English-speaking readers. They portray the everyday lives of grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and fiancées in a country ravaged by decades of war. They depict the position of these women in their society and the opportunities open or closed to them. They include fairies and mermaids, wolves and talismans. They reflect what the authors think, in their own words, about life, love and the war.

The authors include Wasima Badghisi, Batool Haidari, Alia Ataee, Sedighe Kazemi, Khaleda Khorsand, Masouma Kawsari, Mariam Mahboob, Toorpekai Qayum, Manizha Bakhtari, Homeira Qaderi, Parween Pazhwak, and Homayra Rafat.
