James Dillan, a Montreal-based psychiatrist and leading expert in sleep forensics, receives an urgent call from an old friend, Michael Kohler, living in Trento, Italy. A mutual acquaintance has just died under mysterious circumstances in the Dolomite Mountains while on a hiking trip with her twelve-year-old son Vincente. Kohler asks Dillan to help with the investigation since the death may be sleep-related and the Italian police are holding Vincente, the only suspect in his mother’s death.
